These Denver Engagement Photos are the Perfect Inspiration for Your Next Session!
This past holiday season I had the honor of shooting one of the sweetest engagement sessions in downtown Denver. Now I know some of you are thinking, “You’re the photographer of course, you’re going to say it was the sweetest”. I want to argue that just because I photograph couples, doesn’t mean I think each session is the sweetest. Sometimes I think sessions are adventurous. Sometimes I think they are moving and bring me to tears. And yes, even sometimes I think “damn that was a hot and spicey session”. As a photographer, it is important to me that I connect with them on their level. I never approach a session the same way and expect the couple to mold to my set shooting routine and vision. I am capturing their story, not mine. So, when I say it was one of the sweetest engagement sessions, I am speaking from the experience I had working with this couple. Now let’s dive into why this session was so sweet and enjoy these Denver engagement photos.
We met up in downtown Denver about a month before Christmas. Now as many of you know, the holiday hustle and bustle are in full force during this time. Inside Union Station, was a towering yet breathtaking tree set up. Christmas music can be heard no matter where you go. There is chatter from friends and families as they meet up for some holiday shopping. There is magic to this time of year but also a lot of stress (as I’m sure we have all felt at some point in our lives). Working with Fernando & Emily brought peace and joy to the day. It felt like this magical moment in life that is only ever depicted in holiday Hallmark movies (just not cheesy).
One thing I love observing as a photographer and a linguist (I studied linguistics in college) is how couples express themselves; as a couple and as individuals. Whether we realize it or not, humans communicate in many ways, not just verbal communication. That’s why there is the term “body language”. When I work with couples, I pay attention to how they speak to me, friends, family, or other people we may encounter during a shoot. I watch their body language. Then I watch for how that may all change when only engaging with their partner. I love it when one (or both) has a side to them that comes alive only when enamored with their partner. This was Fernando!
When I first met Fernando, I noticed he was quiet and a little soft-spoken. Halfway through the session, the ice had been broken. They were becoming used to just being them while a camera was on them. That’s when this other side of Fernando came alive. Words were not needed for Fernando’s eyes said everything when he gazed at Emily. I only just met this couple, but I knew there was no question, this man was head over heels in love with Emily. Watching these two brought the same joy and excitement as a Jane Austen book (if you know, you know). Emily is one of the sweetest humans you will ever meet. Seriously. I, having just met her, cannot say I know her well. What I can say though is that she was so happy during that shoot. When they were given prompts to just be them and interact with each other you could see that she felt safe and loved with Fernando. This is the kind of shoot photographers dream of.
Now you know why I said this was one of the sweetest engagement shoots. But don’t take my word for it. Let Fernando and Emily show you through these Denver engagement photos!
